In the US loss of life, loss of limbs, eyeballs, testicle(testicles), death, overnight stays in hospitals, wage losses, and more are way more costly to insurance companies, than most cars. It has nothing to do with personal safety, car insurance companies could care less if you die or not, they are concerned only about repair and replacement value of the car. Oddly airbags and internal vehicle distractions arose about the same time. Of course insurance risk and exposure have greatly driven the narrative. But not so strange that he died at the age of 54 from a heart attack. Looking back, it seems strange that he smoked during exams. Your doctor story reminds me of our family doctor when I was a kid. I say: Get out there and LIVE guys! It will put a smile on your old face looking back from your wheel chair in the nursing home. His response was "The vast majority of people die in bed!" I had this discussion with my Doctor, told him that this modern fear of everything and this need to bubble wrap everybody, build a no risk society was ridiculous.
